Interview with Plan 9 from Outer Space re-make’s Johnny Johnson

Written on July 6th, 2008 by GlowStormLion2 shouts

Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to introduce you to Johnny Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment, the man who’s making the Plan 9 from Outer Space re-make happen! He’s been generous enough to offer the Happy Horror team an interview. We struggled to reduce our questions to an appropriate nine and we’re pleased to bring you a blow-by-blow account of how the interview went down.

Without further commentary, here’s the interview!

Red Hawk asks:
Has some of the dialog that’s been mocked over the years been fixed for the upcoming movie? If so how did you handle that, but if not what made you decide to keep it the same?

The film is a remake to be treated seriously so there is only so far you can go with the
original dialogue. 99% of the dialogue is new, however some of the key lines are being mixed in to keep those moments alive…Couldn’t go forward without them.

How did you guys cast the Tor Johnson character? Did you go with another professional wrestler or some other actor?

Actually most of the film is not cast at the moment. The role of Inspector Clay (Tor Johnson) however was one of the first filled. I have a man within our crew that has by all means “the look” so that was a no brainer. JOHN R. PRICE II will be portraying the role.

Are you planning any merchandise to go along with the movie? If so, what is (or will be)
available and how can we fans get our hands on it?
:)

That’s funny. I haven’t thought about that. Most likely whoever the distributor is will have
the control on that play. I just hope I can get a few things myself.

Glittersoul asks:

When did you first see Ed Wood’s original Plan 9 from Outer Space and how did it impact you then?

I had seen Plan 9 From Outer Space back when I was a kid on SUPER SCARY SATURDAY hosted by Grandpa from the Munsters. I was horribly addicted to the show and that happened to be one of my favorite episodes. It was Plan 9 from outer space and my first introduction to Godzilla right after as a double feature. It was a hell of a day. That night I was fighting aliens and giant lizards with my laser tag guns…I won.

While filming this movie can you tell us about any barriers you guys had to overcome or maybe some interesting moments during the filming?

Well, we haven’t gone into production yet. It is slated for March 2009. We will face many of the same obstacles that old Eddie faced in 1959. Budget, casting, time restraints, the main factor being to tell a story that is about aliens resurrecting the dead to destroy the world.

It’s still a hard sell. I’d be happy to update you as we go though. I am sure there will be
more problems to yap about.

It’s crazy idea time! Let’s pretend you’ve got an unlimited budget for marketing the movie, what would you do to get the world’s attention and draw the biggest crowds for 09/09/09?

First, I’d resurrect the dead. Have them hand out flyers. Second, wrestle William Shatner for charity, giving out free tickets for the premiere every time the man knocks me on my ass.

Third, learn how to fly…Just because. And lastly, build a space ship and land it on Tom
Cruise’s house. That could be really exciting.

GlowStormLion asks:

When it comes to special effects for Plan 9, are you guys going with traditional means or CGI?

I am more of a fan of the traditional methods. When it comes to the zombies and aliens expect a lot of that. Now, on the lasers and space ships…Well…CGI kinda makes that happen without spending a fortune. So I would guess a healthy mix.

Can you tell us about any favorite effects you had fun shooting or are particularly proud of?

I am looking forward to seeing the inside of the space ship. From the designs I have been viewing it looks to be quite cool.

What particular scenes or moments in the movie are you most concerned with portraying as close as possible to the original by altering them as little as possible?

Ooh, can’t give that one away. There are a few, and I hope you guys will dig them as much as I do.

If Ed Wood were alive today and you could direct alongside him, but you had to re-make a ‘cult classic movie’ that wasn’t one of Mr. Wood’s, which project would you want to take on with him and why? (Of course, you’re not allowed to pick Plan 9! lol)

Wow! That’s a nifty question…Hmmm…I would have to say I would want to remake the V series from the 1980’s. I loved that show as a kid and would love to see a sequel series or remake. And I think there is enough length in the story for Eddie and me to have our moments in the directing department. Although, I’d give anything to have a dinner with the man, and hear his stories of relentless filmmaking. If he were still kickin’ today I am sure he would knock me over the head and make the remake himself. And rightly so. I just hope I can do what he originally wanted to do with the film and at the same time remember him and his legacy well.

That’s a wrap! Don’t forget to visit check our article on the upcoming
re-make of this cult classic at: www.plan9movie.com

The Day of The Beast is Upon Us!

"Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell who does not have the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom: let anyone with the understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person. Its number is six hundred and sixty-six."

- Revelations 13 : 16-18

Rather ominous, ain’t it? Now, I don’t know about you but I’ve been awaiting this day for several years. There’s something almost magical about 06/06/06, I mean we only get to experience it once every hundred years and all. This is the Year of Aquarius in the western astrological calendar and the Year of the Dog in the Chinese. So many theories on the meaning of the unholy trio of 6’s and so little time to figure it out. Actually, we’re too late it’s already June 6th. We’re doomed.

Nah, I haven’t got a case of hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (fear of the number 666), in fact, I embrace it!

On a more serious note, in homage to this once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the Day of the Beast, I thought I’d give you a rundown of what all is happening today. It’s more than just the opening of The Omen, you know. (Read our Omen review by clicking HERE) So here we go with a quick tour of today’s events!

Damien in The Omen (2006)

Pictured: Damien from The Omen, a little Beast

- Today is the National Day of Sweden! Utomordentligt!

- In Los Angeles, California, the Church of Satan will be holding a high mass at the Steve Allen Theater. Satan is scheduled to attend (joke).

- Baptist preacher Tim LaHaye will release The Rapture, the last of his "Left Behind" series of books based on the biblical book of Revelations. Thanks for scaring the crap out of me as a kid, Tim!

Slayer in 1988

Pictured: Slayer, hoping to reign in The Beast (get it?)

- The venerable Slayer will open their Unholy Alliance Tour – Preaching to the Perverted, in San Diego, California. Today is actually the National Day of Slayer, in case you were unaware. Not only that, it’s their frontman Tom Aray’s birthday. Happy birthday, m#&^@f@#*er! \m/

- Death metal shock act, Deicide (known primarily for being in favor of animal sacrifice (BOOOO!), will release their album The Stench of Redemption.

- David Lee Roth will release his bluegrass tribute to Van Halen, cleverly titled Strummin’ with the Devil.

- Blood Runs Black is set to release their latest album Allegiance.

Ann Coulter's book Godless: The Church of Liberalism

Pictured: Ann Coulter, most likely candidate for actual Beasthood (look at those eyes!)

- Ann Coulter will release her new book titled Over-Opinonated B… Oh, pardon me, I meant Godless: The Church of Liberalism. Really.

- Serbia and Montenegro are now formally dissolved.

Not only do we have all THESE earth-shattering events occurring, there’s some new DVDs coming out. Here’s the list of ones I thought you guys might want to know about:

Underworld: Evolution

Ghost Stories Vol. 5: Graduation Ghoulies

He-Man: Season 2 Vol. 1 (what??)

Godzilla: The Original Animated Series Vol 1 & 2

What’s New Scooby Doo? Vol. 9: Route Scary6 (it is too horror!)

The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin Volume 03: The Fun Road Ahead (Teddy Ruxpin is a major figure in my nightmares to this very day)

Charmed: The Complete Fifth Season

The Godzilla Power Hour Volume 1

Power Rangers Mystic Force Volume 1

The X-Files Season 7, 8 & 9

So, that sums it up! Hope each and every one of you precious viewers have a very special day. Remember – we get Halloween once a year, but the Day of the Beast only happens once a century, so make the most of it! Feel free to leave a comment if you had any exciting exploits, we’d love to hear about them. Until I write again, this is GlowStormLion, rising to world domination. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

“The Horror Blog” featured on AMC’s MonsterFest Blog

Written on May 7th, 2008 by GlowStormLionone shout

Well, it’s nearing our second anniversary here at Happy Horror and alot of things have taken place in that time. There’ve been eras of posting and eras of silence. Other sites have gone up and come back down around us. One mainstay, though, has been The Horror Blog who’s sent us a great deal of visitors. Maybe that’s how some of you came to find us in the first place.

Red Hawk and I have enjoyed participating in The Roundtable over there from time to time. The Roundtable’s entering its 98th week and from what I hear, winding to a close – regrettably.

But there IS good news, horror fans, yes there is! The Horror Blog’s been featured in the AMC (American Movie Classics) Monster Fest Blog! So click on this lil link if you’ve got a moment and have a look! Maybe drop some comment love, too, eh?

‘Fear Itself’ Horror Anthology TV Series Set to Debut

Written on May 4th, 2008 by GlowStormLion2 shouts

If you’re a fan of The Twilight Zone (either the original series or the 2002 series), Alfred Hitchcock Presents or The Outer Limits (the original or the modern), then you might be excited to learn that NBC plans a new horror anthology TV series!

That’s right, it’ll be something similar to what Showtime has with their Masters of Horror series. Which is a huge boon for those of us who don’t have the extra bucks to shell out for pay channels.

According to the showbiz insiders over at Variety, NBC’s going to air thirteen (that’s a lucky number for horror!) episodes of a horror anthology set to be called Fear Itself. Each episode will be an hour long and brought to us by creator Mick Garris, the guy who not only directed Stephen King’s Desperation AND Riding the Bullet, but he produced We Scream for Ice Cream (which I loved)! Oh, and of course the Masters of Horror series on Showtime (for which We Scream for Ice Cream was an episode).

Those of us who tune in will be treated by episodes directed by a range of directors including: Mary Harron (direcor of American Psycho and The Rainbow of Her Reasons episode from Six Feet Under), Darren Bousman (director of Saw 2, 3 and 4), John Landis (writer/director of American Werewolf in London as well as the Family and Deer Woman episodes from Masters of Horror), John Dahl (director of You Kill Me, Joy Ride and two episodes of Tilt), Stuart Gordon (director of Dagon and Re-Animator) who’s directing the pilot episode titled Eater. If you ask me we’re in for a great show. I mean look at those credits!

As for episodes, I’ve only managed to discover a little bit of info on that so far. Looks like there’ll be one featuring Brandon Routh (who you may know as Superman or Clark Kent from 2006’s Superman Returns) and Shiri Appleby who’s television credits include everything from Doogie Howser, M.D. to Baywatch to ER to Xena: Warrior Princess and even Roswell! Appleby and Routh episode (titled Community) has them playing a couple who move into a picture perfect little suburban community before learning what life there is really like. Another episode features a pair of private investigators checking out a hanted house. Finally there’ll be the obligatory serial killer episode where a young police officer gets the opportunity to learn about psychos right up close!

From the sounds of it, we shouldn’t expect quite as much from Fear Itself as Masters of Horror got to show because NBC is, after all, a broadcast network with different regulations it must abide by.

I’m absolutely ecstatic about this news! The series should be airing on your local NBC station starting June 5th, so be sure to tune in. Hopefully they’ll end up with much better ratings than the Masters of Sci Fi got for ABC, right?

A Look Back at Our First Days…

Written on April 27th, 2008 by GlowStormLionno shouts

As you may have noticed, starting today (April 27th, 2008) I’ll be posting up all of our old articles. For a long time Happy Horror hasn’t been updated or properly maintained. That’s all changing now, though. Even though Red Hawk hasn’t currently got access to his own PC, I’ll be posting up first our archived content and then brand new articles!

When I was looking back through our first few posts from the old site, it made me remember all the nerve-wracking moments of trying to set up Happy Horror back then. Neither I, nor any of the rest of our little team had a single clue about what we were doing. All we had was a few dollars and some big ideas.

So with funding exclusively from glittersoul we set up the lil horror blog that could! Two years later we’re still receiving far more visitors than we ever dreamed of. If you’ve got a moment, take a look at this first message with me, wouldja?

Our first post:

"We are live as of May 19th at 9:45pm Pacific Standard time….. :) If you’ve just found our page, please keep in mind that our new look is in the works right now and we’re still configuring things to meet our needs. We appreciate your patience as we get all set up!"

So that’s how it all started. I just needed to memorialize it. I’m sentimental like that, I guess.
